Fair Fares Discounted MetroCard For Low Income New Yorkers

Fair Fares NYC is a program that was created to help low income New Yorkers manage their transportation costs. Eligible persons receive a specially encoded Fair Fares MetroCard that allows them to purchase both value-based and unlimited time-based fares at a 50% discount.

At the current fare pricing, the cost to refill the Fair Fares MetroCard is as follows:

  • The base fare is $1.35 (5% bonus added when customers add $5.50 or more).
  • A 7-day Unlimited, $16.
  • A 30-day Unlimited, $60.50.
Customers can fill their Fair Fares MetroCards at MetroCard Vending Machines, MetroCard Express Machines or at the station service booth.

Currently, the only transactions that Station Agents can perform on the Fair Fares MetroCard is to encode it for value-based or unlimited time-based fares. Station Agents cannot transfer values.

If a customer experiences a problem with their Fair Fares MetroCard, Station Agents SHOULD:
  • direct customers to call 311 (not 511 as shown on the card) and/or contact the agency from where they received the MetroCard.
If a customer experiences a problem with their Fair Fares MetroCard, Station Agents

SHOULD NOT:

  • attempt to perform a transfer to a zero balance MetroCard.
  • issue a Business Return Envelope. All problems with the Fair Fares MetroCard are handled through the agency that issued the MetroCard.
